Aldrich.
GEORGE ALDRICH, the progenitor of one of the oldest Rhode Island
families, and said to be a scion of the English nobility, came from
Derbyshire, England, in 1631, and first settled and joined the church
at Dorchester, Mass. An entry in his diary reads as follows: "God
brought me to America from Derbyshire, in England, November 6, 1631."
In 1640 he had removed to Boston, and from 1644 to 1663, he was a
resident of Braintree. He then removed to Mendon, being one of the
first settlers He remained there during the remainder of his life,
excepting a year or two spent at Swansea in 1669-70, and a brief stay
at Braintree during the King Philip war. His wife was Catherine
((???)). He died in 1682.
JOSEPH ALDRICH, son of George and Catherine ((???)) Aldrich, was born
at Dorchester, Mass., June 4, 1635, and married Patience Osborne, of
Weymouth, daughter of John and Mary ((???)) Osborne, February 26,
1662. Captain Torey, of Weymouth, officiated. In 1687, after a brief
stay at Braintree, they moved to Providence, R. I., where he died in
1701. A sword is found among the items in an inventory of his estate.
SAMUEL ALDRICH, son of Joseph and Patience (Osborne) Aldrich, was born
at Braintree, Mass., about 1664, and married Jane ((???)), about 1681.
They moved to Providence, R. I., with his father, in 1687. He was a
tanner by trade, and in 1706 had eleven shillings, three pence's worth
of leather taken from him "for not training, he being a Quaker." In
1733 he removed to Smithfield, where he died April 2, 1747. Among his
assets were bills of public credit amounting to 184. His wife, Jane,
died soon after.
SAMUEL ALDRICH, son of Samuel and Jane ((???)) Aldrich, was born at
Braintree, Mass., in 1681, and came first to Providence, R. I., and
later to Smithfield, with his father. He married Hannah ((???)), about
1710, at Providence, and died at Smithfield, March 28, 1761. Nothing
further is known of his wife.
SAMUEL ALDRICH, son of Samuel and Hannah ((???)) Aldrich, and known,
to distinguish him from his father and grandfather, as "Swearing Sam"
Aldrich, was born at Providence, R. I, May 4, 1722, and went to
Smithfield with his father in 1733, where he married Elizabeth Keeler,
about 1745. She was an Englishwoman, but little else can be learned
about her. During the Revolutionary war he was 5th ensign in and later
captain of the 2nd company of Smithfield militia. He was also a member
of the town council. This branch of the Aldrich family, while
otherwise above reproach, was noted for many exhibitions of violent
temper and a frequent use of profane language, so much so that they
were called "Hornbeam Aldriches." This name, hornbeam, is said to have
first been applied to them as the result of an expression used by the
subject of this sketch on a certain occasion, to wit: He was standing
in his front door one day watching a thunder storm, when the lightning
struck a hornbeam tree in his front yard, damaging it, however,
scarcely any. Seeing how effectively the tough species of timber had
resisted the power of the lightning, Sam is said to have exultingly
exclaimed:
"God, you got your match that time, didn't you?"
Thus did the family come to be known as the "Hornbeam Aldriches," and
it is claimed the scarcity of the tree in recent years is accounted
for upon the supposition that the timber has all been used up in
making Aldriches, since a numerous race.
"Swearing Sam" is credited with another anecdote illustrating his
irrepressible nature, which, aside from this habit, was not, however,
bad. One day the recently ordained pastor of the church, a stranger to
Sam, but not to his profane propensity, started out to call on him and
met him not far from home.
"My good friend," said the clergyman, "can you inform me where a man
lives who is known in the neighborhood, I am sorry to learn, as
'Swearing Sam Aldrich?'"
The object of the clergyman's search, without a moment's hesitation,
replied: "Jesus, God, I'm the man." Captain Samuel Aldrich died in
November, 1802, and in 1894 the writer found his grave, among others,
on the brow of a hill an eighth of a mile east of the Metcalf Comstock
homestead, two miles southwest of Woonsocket, on the road from Union
Village to Tarkiln. The farm is south of the road and slopes to the
north.
